‘It’s a moment that I will never forget.’ Alexis Mac Allister recalls his memories of winning the World Cup with Argentina.

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has shared his exhilarating experience of winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina in Qatar.

Mac Allister has had a whirlwind of success in recent years, having joined Brighton as a relatively unknown player to most European football observers.

He soon established himself as one of the world’s best midfielders, breaking into the Argentina national squad and eventually winning the prized World Cup.

His standout exploits in the tournament drew significant praise, and when combined with his stellar success while playing for Brighton, which gained European football qualification for the first time, Mac Allister’s stock skyrocketed.

This outstanding performance won him a lucrative £35 million summer transfer to Liverpool, cementing his status as one of football’s top prospects.

“If you asked me one month before the World Cup if I was going to be in the squad, I was not sure,” the South American said.

“Lo Celso got injured as well. There was one position that we didn’t have one player because Lo Celso used to play almost every game. So from that time, I saw that I could have an opportunity.

“Everything was very fast from not even knowing if I was going to be in the squad to (then) play in one of the most important games for the national team in the last ten years.

“You could see the team was in a very good mood. You couldn’t see like emotions because we were really focused on what we had to do at that time.”

“But for example, if you ask me in the changing room after the defeat to Saudi Arabia that was different and that was one of the most important things.”

“That game made us stronger.”

Asked if winning the World Cup has actually set in for him, Mac Allister added, “I don’t think so. I don’t think we have realised what we did.

“I think it was the first time I saw my dad crying. Yeah, he’s not a softy guy. It’s a moment I will never forget.”

Amid an impressive debut season at Liverpool, where he has already won the Carabao Cup, Mac Allister shares his ambitious aspirations to add more medals to his cherished collection of memorabilia in the near future.

“Maybe this year we can think about the Premier League, Europa League,” he said.

“I think when you want something, you have to work for it – and this group is very good at that. I think this is a group of winners.

“I came to a club that wants to keep winning and keep competing. The most important thing, I think, is that they are good people as well.

“I think this team wants to go game by game, step by step. But we know that we have very good chances of getting trophies.

“If you ask me, of course the idea is to win everything we can. But for that, we have to keep working and keep improving.

“Do we want to win? Yes, everything. But we have to focus on [a] daily basis, do our best, keep improving and then at the end we will see what we achieve.”
