All things considered, the three and a half years from July 2007 to January 2011 were a very ordinary period of time to be a Liverpool supporter.

They weren’t especially bad—those years were still ahead of us—but they weren’t especially good either, with no trophies to speak of and only a Premier League runners-up trophy to brag about. “Meh” years in the club’s modern history, not only because there was no Istanbul but also because there was no “Stoke City 6-1 Liverpool.” Or rather, in the absence of one guy, they would have been.

Fernando Torres made the announcement on Friday that he would be ending a career that had not gone well since moving to Chelsea in 2011. In the eight years that have passed, he has returned to Atletico Madrid, gone on two loan stints with AC Milan, and moved to Sagan Tosu in Japan. Despite his checkered (at best) career, the fact that no one really seemed to care about him at the height of his abilities says volumes about the lasting impression he made.
