Notably, Haaland scored his 41st goal in the Champions League despite only playing 37 matches. The Norwegian player tied Sergio Aguero’s Champions League scoring record, although it took the former Argentine striker 79 matches to accomplish that number, 42 more than Haaland.
The 23-year-old’s goal total is so impressive that only 18 guys in the competition’s history have scored more than him.
Haaland’s goal also puts him at the top of the Champions League scoring charts this season, alongside Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe. All three players mentioned above have scored six goals in the event. Haaland, Mbappe, and Kane will all have the opportunity to improve their performances after helping their teams advance to the quarterfinals.
Haaland won the Champions League championship for the first time in his career last year, and Manchester City is a strong contender to defend it this year. If Manchester City makes it to the final again this season, Haaland will have five more opportunity to boost his goal count.
Returning to the game, Manuel Akanji and Julian Alvarez scored in the opening 9 minutes to give Manchester City a 2-0 lead.
Mohamed Elyounoussi, who played for Southampton in the Premier League, pulled one back, but Haaland restored Man City’s two-goal lead just before halftime.ime.
