Trey Nyoni became Liverpool’s youngest FA Cup player at 16 years and 243 days. Liverpool bought Nyoni from Championship side Leicester City in September. He was born four days before Fernando Torres joined in 2007.
Following his promotion to the under-21s in early November, Jurgen Klopp called up the teenager for their Premier League match against Brentford.
Nyoni made history on Wednesday by replacing Harvey Elliott in the 78th minute of Liverpool’s 3-0 triumph over Southampton after months of waiting.
As shown in the video below, Klopp was thrilled to give the youngster his first-team debut as Anfield celebrated another academy product.
Liverpool’s bright kids have had a busy few days.
Klopp gave five academy products—Conor Bradley, Bobby Clark, James McConnell, Jayden Danns, and Jarell Quansah—a time to shine in their Carabao Cup final win over Chelsea.
On Wednesday, 18-year-old Lewis Koumas scored his first goal for the club on his first-team debut, and Jayden Danns scored twice in his third senior game.
After the game, Klopp praised his young team.
“Amazing game,” he said. Southampton is a top team; our midfield press was off. In 15 minutes, Saints could have scored, but we found our way and scored a great goal.
“Koumas is a great finisher, Dannsy we knew. He stays calm—proof of his nose, he’s at the correct place, he comes.”
Klopp said: “The whole event was special. We don’t always want to talk about hard situations, but there’s a nice vibe.”
Jayden Danns, who scored twice in the second half against Russell Martin’s side, discussed his “dream” debut to the first-team.
“I’ve supported the club since birth so to score at the Kop end it’s unreal,” said. “The keeper comes close, so you dink it. The second one I lost my cool and fell.
“I don’t know what my dad is doing when I score because he was crying when I debuted.”
