During a club friendly in Riyadh, Al Nassr, without Cristiano Ronaldo, outperformed Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami, winning 6-0.
Al Nassr put on an electrifying performance on Thursday night, defeating Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami 6-0 in a club friendly at Riyadh’s Kingdom Arena. Despite Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence from the event (due to an injury), spectators were treated to a glimpse of his long-standing rivalry with Messi shortly after the game began.
Al Nassr made an exciting start to the game, with Brazilian Talisca scoring three goals in the first 12 minutes against their Major League Soccer opponents. The crowd were ecstatic as a Messi-less Inter Miami – the Argentine started from the bench – appeared helpless in the middle, with their new additions, Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets, unable to make an impact on the game.
During the 24th minute, the official broadcasters focused their cameras on Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in a split-screen format; Messi appeared concerned as he sat on the bench, while Ronaldo was in the VIP box.
The footage flashed on the stadium’s large screen as well, and Ronaldo smiled proudly when he saw himself on it. The footage quickly went viral on social media networks.
Messi and Ronaldo have been fueling one of football’s most renowned rivalries since their early years. Ronaldo’s 2008 Ballon d’Or victory with Manchester United sparked the competition; for the next nine years, the duo shared the Ballon d’Or trophy until Croatia’s Luka Modric ended the streak in 2018.
Ronaldo’s move to Real Madrid, Messi’s archrivals at FC Barcelona, signaled the start of an era defined by intense competitiveness.
While both have won practically every club honor imaginable, Messi ‘finished football’ by lifting the 2022 World Cup trophy with Argentina. It is the lone trophy absent from Ronaldo’s collection, though he did win a continental title with Portugal in 2016 when the team won the Euros.
Talisca’s hat-trick not only underlined the huge socioeconomic divide, but also paid respect to Ronaldo with his joyful move.
As Inter Miami prepares for the new MLS season, which begins on February 21, they will now focus on upcoming games in Asia, having already played against El Salvador and FC Dallas before traveling to the Middle East.
