Wolves 3 Manchester United 4: Mainoo the hero after amazing injury-time victory, as Rashford scores on return from tequila party

Marcus Rashford did not celebrate on the ‘dentist’s chair’.

Erik ten Hag, the most sober of Dutchmen, resisted the temptation to imitate Paul Merson’s old beer-drinking routine.

Kobbie Mainoo was the hero at Wolves for Manchester United, with the victory.

But Manchester United — a first-choice United for the first time this season — played plenty of champagne football, as Ten Hag’s decision to start his thirsty England forward proved to be a masterstroke.

Rashford was on the tequila slammers in Belfast last Thursday night before emailing Ten Hag a questionable sick letter.

This Thursday, it was a new kind of shot for United’s bad boy, but the results were just as exhilarating.

Rashford opened the scoring after only five minutes, and young star Kobbie Mainoo sealed a stunning victory following a seven-goal thriller.

The smart Alec Molineux DJ had been playing tequila-related songs during the warm-up.

But his tactics to wind up the visitors backfired when Rashford hammered home early on, pushing Ten Hag’s squad to their most emphatic win of the season over in-form Wolves.

Ten Hag, who considers himself a disciplinarian, made a brave decision to reinstate Rashford to the starting lineup after he missed Sunday’s FA Cup win at Newport.

But it was a logical decision, given that Rashford had already matched his season’s goal count in his previous two league games. It was a big night for both manager and player, as patience had worn thin among the United fans.

Marcus Rashford opened the score after only five minutes. It was the perfect return for Rashford after his Belfast bender—but there was no cheeky booze-themed celebration.

It wasn’t just Rashford’s binge drinking and refusal to show up for work; it was also a run of form that didn’t compare to last season’s heroics.

But here, he demonstrated enormous resolve in the face of self-inflicted adversity and criticism, firing United to a mood-altering victory before Rasmus Hojlund, Scott McTominay, and Mainoo finished the job.

To be fair to Ten Hag, whenever he has been asked about his own future, he has consistently responded with ‘wait till everyone is fit’.

With the probable exception of Mason Mount, this was the Dutchman’s favored lineup, and this was a totally different United, as a Wolves side unbeaten in seven games was thwarted.

United are still only eighth and eight points below the Champions League places, but a continuation of current form may persuade Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team to continue with their boss.

Rashford had been benched here last season after skipping an alarm call and a squad meeting, but Ten Hag rescued his England striker before halftime, and he scored the winner.

This time, the offense was more serious, but Rashford returned to the starting lineup, along with keeper Andre Onana, following his brief appearance with Cameroon in the African Nations Cup.

United’s first goal was a brilliant team effort, a square ball from Diogo Dalot that was dummied by Bruno Fernandes before Hojlund fought off his man and laid off for Rashford to blast it into the bottom corner.

The England player had barely touched the ball before that, but it was a strong and confident finish, especially given the background noise.

His celebration consisted of a basic knee-slide followed by handshakes, which paled in comparison to Paul Gascoigne’s most famous celebration following a Hong Kong hoo-ha prior to Euro 1996.

However, this is a different era.

Back in George Best’s day, drinking extensively with Irish servers was the standard for a United winger.

If you’re an exceptional footballer, this is a more serious age.

Wolves then pinned United back for a while without really threatening Onana, but by the halfway point of the second half, the score was 2-0.

This time, Rashford weighted a pass down the left to the overlapping Luke Shaw, whose driven centre rebounded off Max Kilman before Hojlund dived in front of Craig Dawson to score.

Casemiro headed a Fernandes free-kick slightly wide, Hojlund rushed down an attempted Jose Sa clearing and nearly redirected it into the net, and Fernandes fired narrowly wide.

United were in the midst of a purple patch, which they have had on several occasions this season but have yet to sustain for 90 minutes.

The visitors scored twice more before halftime, but both were ruled out for offside.

First, Hojlund beat Sa with a Rashford feed, then Casemiro headed in from a Fernandes free kick.

It was the most dominant 45 minutes United had experienced all season.

In the second half, Alejandro Garnacho fed Hojlund, only for Sa to block his attempt.

Wolves were temporarily back in the game after Casemiro’s boot collided with Pedro Neto, who went down.

Ref Jarred Gillett directed to the spot, VAR Paul Tierney declined to overrule him, and Pablo Sarabia blasted home.

Rashford was then replaced by Antony, and United’s two-goal lead was restored when substitute McTominay headed in a Fernandes corner.

Kilman swiveled to poke home and halve United’s deficit in the dying minutes.

And it appeared that United’s hard work had been undone when Neto equalized in injury time.

But Mainoo held his cool and glided through to curl in the winner for his first Premier League goal.
