Man United reject chance to sign Karim Benzema over sky-high wage demands, with club anxious to avoid FFP rule breaches

Manchester United have passed down the chance to sign Karim Benzema.

The 36-year-old French striker has been linked with a move away from the Saudi Pro League after only six months there.

Manchester United declined the opportunity to buy Karim Benzema from Al-Ittihad. Erik ten Hag’s only recognized center-forward is Rasmus Hojlund.

Despite having only one recognised centre-forward – Rasmus Hojlund – for the remainder of the season, Manchester United refused to even hold talks.

That is because to what they allege are “exorbitant” costs associated with bringing the star, who earns £86 million per year, to Old Trafford.

To comply with Financial Fair Play requirements, United is paying close attention to its own payroll bill and budget.

Benzema joined Al-Ittihad on a free transfer from Real Madrid this summer.

He has 12 goals in 20 games, but his move to the Middle East has not been as successful as he had hoped, with his new club in seventh place.

Benzema, the club captain, returned from a winter vacation this month 17 days later than scheduled.

However, he called allegations that he intends to leave Saudi Arabia “false” this week.

With Anthony Martial sidelined for the remainder of the season, United’s only available out-and-out striker is Hojlund.

Manchester United’s strikers have notably underperformed thus far this season.

The 28-year-old French forward underwent surgery for a groin injury and will now spend a significant amount of time resting and recovering.

His contract expires after the season, and the club has no desire to exercise an option to extend it for another 12 months.

He has made only five Premier League starts in 2023/24, missing the last five due to illness.Tin chuyển nhượng tối 6/1: Zidane xác nhận thay thế HLV Ten Hag; Karim Benzema
