“Golden State Warriors’ star Klay Thompson attributes his athletic development to parents Mychal and Julie.”
Klay Thompson, son of players Mychal and Julie Thompson, was born on February 8, 1990. Mychal played NBA for the Portland Trailblazers, San Antonio Spurs, and Los Angeles Lakers, while Julie competed in volleyball and track and field at the collegiate level.
Klay’s older brother, Mychel, spent six seasons in the NBA’s G League, and the couple’s younger son, Trayce, plays outfield for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Klay and his brothers acknowledge their parents’ influence in their decision to pursue athletic careers, but claim they were never pressured to do so. He is a commentator for the Los Angeles Lakers and claims that his father has always been his “biggest believer.”
He told the New York Times in 2014, “He has always told me since I was about 17 that I could make it to the NBA if I just stayed humble and worked hard.” If I mess up, he will not treat me like a cupcake. He is one of the most open individuals you will ever encounter.
Mychal is a radio announcer and analyst.
Before the 2003-2004 season, Mychal rejoined the Lakers organization as a radio announcer after retiring from the NBA. According to ESPN, Klay was allowed to practice basketball on the Lakers’ floor before each home game when he was 14 years old.
Mychal, the Lakers’ radio analyst for 20 years, will face off against his son’s team in the 2023 NBA playoffs. The Golden State Warriors player joked to the press about who he thought his father would be convicted for: “If I had to guess, probably his employer.”
He especially stated, “I have so many great memories of him watching the Lakers, Kobe, Shaq, and Pau [Gasol].” I’m excited to represent the team I rooted for as a child.
Mychal was born in the Bahamas.
According to the National Archives of the Bahamas, Mychal was born in Nassau. He began playing basketball at the age of sixteen.
In March 2021, he told NBC Sports that one of the reasons Klay loves the sea is because he takes his children there. He said, “Ever since he was a kid, he’s always been fascinated and attracted to the water, whether it be swimming, jumping in pools, jumping in lakes up in Oregon, or jumping in the river.” I credit it to his Bahamian heritage.
Mychal believes Klay’s enthusiasm for the ocean will continue after his NBA career. “Yeah. My guess is no. In a July 2021 interview with the site, Mychal stated, “I would be shocked if he hung around the NBA.” He is enthusiastic about sailing and the sea. It wouldn’t surprise me if he decided to board a yacht and do a world cruise.
He went on to say, “I want to retire to the Bahamas as an elderly sea captain, leading tour groups around and showing them around, and all that. That seems like something he would do.
Mychal frequently brought Klay to the Staples Center for work.
Mychal used to bring Klay with him when he announced Lakers home games so that Klay could shoot hoops and get some advice from NBA great Kobe Bryant.
In July 2022, Mychal told 95.7 The Game’s “Willard & Dibs” that it would make his job easier in terms of basketball. “Because I could take him to Staples Center and say, ‘There’s Kobe; go talk to him.'” Kobe frequently stopped what he was doing to meet with Klay and other rising basketball talents.
He said, “And he would tell them about the right way to approach the game, the right way to play, and to have passion for the game…” “When an icon like Kobe Bryant gives advice, I can just sit back and relax a little bit. He’ll probably listen to that guy more than he’ll listen to me.”
