Anthony Martial appears to have played his final game for Manchester United.
The French striker will be out for at least ten weeks after undergoing surgery to treat an existing groin problem.
Martial will be out of action until at least April, just weeks before the season ends, due to the rehabilitation period. And, with the French forward having not played for United since early December, manager Erik ten Hag is unlikely to consider him again.
Martial’s £250,000-per-week contract expires at the end of the season, and United have decided not to exercise an option to extend it by another year. United are happy to let the 28-year-old leave as a free agent at the end of the season, even if it means losing money on him through a potential transfer fee.
Anthony Martial’s Manchester United career has all but ended following a major injury blow.
Martial, who joined United from Monaco in 2015 for £36 million (later increased to £57 million), promised much when he scored a spectacular solo goal against their arch rivals Liverpool in a 3-1 victory at Old Trafford.
The amount United spent on Martial made him the most expensive teenager in world football, and he appeared to be one of the world’s top attacking players.
However, Martial failed to live up to his early promise, as a series of ailments and a questionable attitude prevented him from establishing himself under a succession of United managers.

Martial has been in and out of United’s team this season, and his inconsistency is highlighted by the fact that he has only scored twice in 19 appearances across all competitions. He last appeared for United on December 9, in a humbling 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth.
It is reported that a number of Saudi clubs are willing to grant Martial a hefty new contract to help him revitalize his stalled career.
Louis van Gaal signed Martial, who is now United’s second-longest-serving player after defender Luke Shaw.
