Jude Bellingham has become Real Madrid’s first signing for the 2023-2024 season, and it’s no ordinary signing. The Spanish club has already paid a minimum of 103 million euros to secure one of the most promising players in the world. Following the completion of the stadium renovation project and a disappointing Champions League exit against Manchester City, Florentino Pérez knows that it’s time to make ambitious signings to reclaim the top spot as soon as possible.
All of this could potentially lead to the biggest signing of them all: Kylian Mbappé. The Frenchman has decided not to renew his contract with Paris Saint-Germain, and two scenarios could unfold: either Madrid signs him this year for a hefty sum or he joins as a free agent next summer.
There are valid questions about how Mbappé will fit into the team tactically. He is not a traditional number 9 and has even had disagreements with PSG over his desire to play alongside one. Additionally, he operates in similar areas of the pitch where Vinicius Jr excels. However, in a Carlo Ancelotti-led team, the harmony within the squad often takes precedence over rigid positional roles. If Mbappé is kept happy, he could lead the line effectively.
The arrival of Mbappé doesn’t necessarily make things straightforward. Mbappé prefers to play from the left, but Madrid has no plans to change his position, especially if they don’t sign another attacking player that would warrant a reshuffle. And why would they? Vinicius Jr outperformed Mbappé at times last season and is expected to continue improving. This situation may become more complex next year if Madrid brings in a more traditional number 9 to keep Mbappé satisfied. Until then, Vinicius will remain the primary option on the left flank, which is certainly not a disadvantage.
As for Jude Bellingham, there were no expectations he failed to meet at Borussia Dortmund. He played a crucial role in leading the team’s late charge for the Bundesliga title, and it’s even believed that Dortmund’s collapse on the final day may not have happened if Bellingham had been available. However, Bellingham won’t get another opportunity in Germany as Real Madrid has secured his services on a long-term contract. Bellingham’s versatility and talent make him an excellent addition to any midfield, and he should thrive alongside Madrid’s current midfield options. While there may be some adjustment period, as is often the case for Madrid midfielders, the quality players around him should help facilitate a smooth transition.
