Although Manchester United’s performance in December was scarcely a reason for joy, the month wasn’t without its bright spots.
Though it was United’s worst December since the 1930s, the club set records, and Alejandro Garnacho kept becoming a legitimate first-team player.
The Argentine received United’s Player of the Month award for December in recognition of his efforts.
Since he also received this prize in November, it is the first time in his career that he has won it twice.
Garnacho’s victory over Jonny Evans and Kobbie Mainoo for the prize highlights the importance of United’s academy to the team.
Garnacho has appeared to be a man on a quest to win games for United by himself while the team’s offense has fluctuated between lackluster performances.
His daring runs and audacious attacking flair have already established him as an Old Trafford favorite.
It has contrasted sharply with the other offensive players on a dysfunctional team that suffered five losses in December, who appeared tired and out of it.
In December, Garnacho had two goals and two assists, including a stunning performance that helped United overcome Aston Villa 3-2.
Garnacho’s contributions have been so significant and revealing that United might be in the lowest half of the table if he hadn’t been there this season.
Since Garnacho joined Erik ten Hag’s squad at the age of 19, he has received numerous individual honors.
The squad must then rise to the occasion and begin gathering team trophies in addition to him.
If not, there won’t be much time until Garnacho’s feet begin to tremble and a few Spanish giants begin to circle around United’s genius.
