Barcelona is reportedly targeting Manchester United’s talented forward, Mason Greenwood, and is prepared to make a substantial £40 million bid to secure his services. As part of the deal, they are also offering him the iconic No. 10 shirt previously worn by Lionel Messi.
Greenwood, who recently went on loan to La Liga club Getafe, has been making a strong impression in Spanish football. With five goals and four assists, the 22-year-old striker has played a significant role in Getafe’s climb to eighth place in the league table.
Barcelona is currently leading the race among three clubs vying for Greenwood’s signature. Given his apparent comfort in Spain, it seems unlikely that Greenwood will return to Manchester United. Getafe is keen to make his stay permanent, but Barcelona’s interest and the allure of wearing the prestigious No. 10 shirt could prove tempting.
Since Lionel Messi’s departure from Barcelona in August 2021, the No. 10 shirt has remained unclaimed, with Ansu Fati temporarily taking it. Now, Barcelona sees an opportunity to entice Greenwood, a talented player born in Bradford, to join their ranks and contribute to the creation of an exciting new team.
Greenwood has been working to rebuild his career after a challenging period. In February, charges of attempted rаpe, controlling and coercive behavior, and аssаult causing bоdily harm against him were dropped. Manchester United initially planned to reintegrate him into the team, but public opposition led to a change of plans. Greenwood subsequently made the decision to join Getafe, marking his return to competitive football after an 18-month absence.
While a return to Manchester United cannot be ruled out entirely, it currently appears unlikely. Barcelona’s offer and the opportunity for a fresh start with the Catalan giants may sway Greenwood towards a new chapter in his career.
