Marcus Rashford teams up with Football Beyond Borders and Nike to launch a groundbreaking initiative called “Play Forward,” aimed at instilling self-belief in the next generation of young people.
Collaborating with the curriculum team at Football Beyond Borders, Rashford and Nike have developed the Play Forward curriculum, which utilizes the power of football to help 11 and 12-year-olds discover their own unique abilities, build strong relationships, and dream big.
The program covers various themes, including community values, confidence and self-belief, goal-setting and visualization, and skills and strategies. With the guidance of trustworthy and relatable adults, the goal is to create an environment where all young people can flourish in their regular education. Play Forward targets Year 7 students, offering a 12-week program conducted at community centers and partner schools.
Through Manchester Young Lives, the program delivers two-hour weekly on and off-pitch sessions. At the culmination of each 12-week program, participants come together for a graduation ceremony, providing an opportunity for interaction, reflection, and celebration of their journey.
Play Forward places a strong emphasis on social-emotional learning techniques, empowering young people to make better decisions, improve their interpersonal skills, and manage their emotions effectively. This aligns with the belief that these skills are crucial for their success both in the classroom and on the field.
Nike has pledged its support to the project, investing £1,000,000 over a span of five years. The initiative will initially focus on Greater Manchester, Rashford’s hometown, with plans to expand to London and Birmingham, prioritizing underprivileged areas.
By combining the power of football and mentorship, Play Forward aims to inspire and empower the next generation, enabling them to fulfill their potential and achieve their dreams.
