On this day six years ago, Liverpool agreed on a world-record deal with Southampton to recruit defender Virgil van Dijk.
On December 27, 2017, it was revealed that the highly sought-after Dutchman would join Liverpool on January 1 in a deal costing £75 million, the biggest fee ever paid for a defender at the moment.
“Southampton Football Club can confirm it has reached an agreement with Liverpool over the transfer of Virgil van Dijk,” said a Southampton statement.
“Southampton have agreed to a fee for a defender that will set a new world record.” “The club wishes Virgil the best of luck in his future after the transaction is completed on January 1, 2018.”
Van Dijk had submitted a transfer request over the summer of 2017 to expedite the move.
Following the announcement of Liverpool’s contract, the then-26-year-old tweeted: “Delighted and honored to have agreed to become a Liverpool FC player.” Today is a happy day for me and my family because I am joining one of the largest clubs in the world.
“I can’t wait to pull on the famous red shirt for the first time in front of the Kop and will give everything I have to try and help this great club achieve something special in the years to come.”
Van Dijk made his Liverpool debut against Everton in the third round of the FA Cup on January 5, 2018 and scored the game-winning goal.
Over the last five years, the 32-year-old has been considered one of the top players in the world, playing a significant role in the Reds winning numerous major trophies, including the Champions League and Premier League.
Manchester United broke the record for the highest sum paid for a defender when they signed Harry Maguire from Leicester for £80 million in 2019.
