Virgil van Dijk, the captain of Liverpool, was not pleased with referee Chris Kavanagh during Saturday’s 1-1 draw between Arsenal and Liverpool at Anfield.
In the first 19 minutes, Martin Odegaard, the captain, made an NBA-style move to pull a low ball away from Mo Salah, and Arsenal withstood a strong penalty appeal.
After the game, Gunners defender William Saliba told Viaplay that his team was fortunate with the call. “Of course, it was a penalty,” he said. But I’m not officiating.
In the second half, Van Dijk was found to have fouled Gabriel Jesus close to the center circle, which resulted in another decision going against Liverpool.
Van Dijk let out his annoyance at referee Kavanagh. On TV, supporters who were reading lips noticed the Dutchman questioning the referee, “Have you been drinking?”
Van Dijk mimed tipping a glass towards his mouth, a clear gesture to go along with his remarks.
Van Dijk’s outburst went unpunished, and the Reds defender finished the match on Saturday without being shown a yellow card.
He might still be subject to a retroactive penalty, though, if it is determined that his behaviour towards the referee was unlawful.
