Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Erling Haaland announced as finalists for FIFA Best Me𝚗’s Player award 2023
FIFA has revealed the three finalists for the prestigious FIFA Best Me𝚗’s Player award for 2023, and they are Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Erling Haaland. These players were chosen from a pool of 12 initially nominated candidates by an expert panel. To be among the top three, Messi, Mbappe, and Haaland had to outshine the likes of Juan Alvarez, Marcelo Brozovic, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Victor Osimhen, and Declan Rice.
It’s worth noting that the award considers achievements made between December 19, 2022, and August 20, 2023. The World Cup final held on December 18, 2022, will not be taken into account.
While Messi’s accomplishments with Argentina at the 2022 World Cup are highlighted on the FIFA homepage, Mbappe also made an impact with his performances for PSG, winning the Ligue 1 title alongside Messi and Neymar.
Messi has been in exceptional form for Inter Miami in the United States, contributing five assists and 11 goals in his last 14 games, accounting for approximately 42% of his overall achievements during the specified period.
Mbappe, on the other hand, is listed as the runner-up, having faced defeat against Messi’s Argentina in the 2022 World Cup. He is also closing in on Miroslav Klose’s all-time World Cup scoring record, with just four goals behind the former German striker’s tally of 16.
Haaland, who is widely expected to win the FIFA Best Me𝚗’s Player award this year, has also made it to the final round. FIFA acknowledges his outstanding performances for Manchester City, where he played a crucial role in the club’s success, securing the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League titles.
During the evaluation period, Haaland scored an impressive 36 goals in 44 games, excluding his assists. His remarkable goal-scoring record and impact on the field have earned him a strong position in the race for the award.
Besides the top three male players, FIFA has also disclosed the finalists for the top three male football coaches, namely Luciano Spalletti (Napoli and Italy), Pep Guardiola (Manchester City), and Simone Inzaghi (Inter). The previous year’s recipient of this award was Argentine coach Lionel Scaloni.
In the wоme𝚗’s division, Aitana Bonmati, Linda Caicedo, and Jennifer Hermoso have been announced as the top three finalists for the FIFA Best Wоme𝚗’s Player Award 2023.
