‘Good news for Man Utd’: Jurgen Klopp’s core player now ruled out of Sunday clash at Anfield

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that midfielder Alexis MacAllister will miss Sunday’s Premier League match against Manchester United. The Argentine international is now out with an injury suffered in last Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Sheffield United.

Mac Allister suffered a cut on his knee and originally continued with it bandaged up until being forced off and replaced by Curtis Jones in the 59th minute.

After missing Saturday’s victory over Crystal Palace, Mac Allister will now miss games against Union Saint-Gilloise and Manchester United.

Klopp claimed the player’s injury is more serious than it initially appeared ahead of Thursday’s Europa League match against Union SG.

“I am obviously not a doctor, but they explain to me pretty much every day why he is not ready yet, and it is obviously a bit more complicated than we thought in the first moment,” Liverpool manager Klopp told reporters.

“The other boy stepped on his knee, and the stud went through the muscle and onto the bone.” And now we have to wait until the bone heals and Macca is able to deal with the pain, which is excruciating.

“Macca is a tough guy, so we’ll probably have to make sure nothing happens in terms of infection.” That is critical.

“I’ve never had this injury for one of my players before, but now we have it.” I hope it doesn’t take that long; I’d want to say it’s day by day, but it would imply he may possibly play the next game, but he won’t be ready for that either. So, I’m hoping that in the next three or four days he takes significant steps, and then we’ll see.”

Joel Matip, Andrew Robertson, Stefan Bajcetic, Thiago Alcantara, and Diogo Jota flank Mac Allister on the bench.

The Reds have also rested Alisson Becker, Virgil Van Dijk, Trent Alexander Arnold, and Mohamed Salah for Thursday’s dead-rubber against Union SG.

With Liverpool having guaranteed first place in Group E, Klopp has his sights set on Sunday’s Premier League showdown with Manchester United.

The Merseyside club will enter the weekend as league leaders, having collected 37 points from their 16 league games.
